Nowadays, there are few traces left in these dogs, which still remind us of their old purpose. Modern dogs are much smaller in size, but they still feature tough musculation, heavy bone and wrinkled muzzle. These dogs are very sociable, and their temperament has nothing to do with that of their fathers. These animals are heirs to old butcher dogs, which were famous for their great strength and incredible ferocity. Those dogs were engaged in brutal bull-baiting contests. Many dogs were killed or mutilated, very few were lucky to survive years of such life.

All three modern varieties of these dogs can be described as stocky and muscular. They are not large, but their weight is rather impressive for their size. The English variety of the breed weighs up to 50 pounds and stands from 13 to 15 inches at the shoulders. The main characteristics of all varieties of this breed are a large heavy head with a large, strong undershot lower jaw and a short muzzle. The head and face are heavily wrinkled. The coat is short, and lying close to the body. The coat color varies from brown, tan, white to brindle and piebald.
