All three varieties of these dogs are stocky and muscular animals. They can not be called large, but their weight is rather impressive for their size. The English variety of the breed measures from 13 to 15 inches at the shoulders and weighs up to 50 pounds. The main characteristics of this breed are a large heavy head with a protruding lower jaw and a short muzzle. The head and face are heavily wrinkled. The coat is short, and lying close to the body. The coat color varies from brown, tan, white to brindle and piebald.

In order to eliminate viciousness, breeders added the gene of the Pug into the dog’s gene pool. English and French varieties sprung from old English butcher dogs. By now, these dogs have lost their viciousness and are raised as companion dogs. These animals have very strong bodies and relatively large heads. Modern species are smaller in size than their fathers, and they are no longer ferocious. They love human company, and they do perfectly well with children and other animals in the house.
