Bulldogs - General Information
Bulldogs are short-coated dogs with a square body type and muscular build. Generally speaking, the English, the American, and the French Bulldog have common features. Still, they are not mere replicas of each other differing only in size and function.
The English and the French Bulldogs are known as companions. They are amiable pets, which do well in an apartment assuming they are exercised daily. The French Bulldog is much smaller in comparison to its English and American relatives. It weighs from 19 to 28 pounds, whereas other Bulldogs can weigh 40-70 pounds.
Though all the Bulldogs are strong, intelligent dogs, the American Bulldog is especially famous for its hardiness and ability to adapt to harsh conditions. The point is that it is a working dog. It can do a great job as a guardian, or many other things, if it is trained properly. Like all the Bulldogs, the American species can be intractable.
Bulldogs - History
The English Bulldog is the oldest of all the three breeds. It was developed in England in the 13th century as a pit fighter.
The origin of the French Bulldog is still not very clear. A conventional opinion is that the breed was a mere by-product of the English Bulldog breeding. Small, undeveloped species with erect ears were not a success in England. Nevertheless, the French welcomed those dogs and probably crossed them with Terriers.
The dogs, that gave impetus to the appearance of the American Bulldog, made its way to America along with the first settlers. Life on the frontier suited them to a T. Bulldogs were valued much for their zeal and working abilities.
